A Special Soccer Event for Kids with Special Abilities

What is TOPSoccer?

TOPSoccer is a community-based play, training and team placement program for young athletes with special needs (abilities). It is run by local volunteers and designed to meet the needs of children with physical and/or other special needs. The program targets those kids ages 4 and up who would like to play soccer, but are challenged by the traditional soccer environment, including those kids with physical supports and wheelchairs.

The program is geared towards player development rather than to competition.

Play Days

In mid-August, TOPSoccer will kick off the soccer season with a Play Day and Registration Event. This event is held on a Saturday morning from 10-11:30am. The event is free and open to all children with special needs, our Players. We request that families register their Players to ensure an appropriate level of support. At the Play Day, TOPSoccer Players learn and practice soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, agility, and shooting as they rotate through skill stations run by registered coaches. Each Player is paired up with a Buddy (a typically developing peer) who can help cheer, model, and encourage participation at each skill station. After a rest break for water and some parachute play, Players and Buddies are divided into teams and practice their new skills in small-sided scrimmages.  While Players are busy on the field, families can watch and cheer them along! The Play Day gives Players and their families an opportunity to “test drive” the soccer experience, and ask questions about the TOPSoccer League. Players and families who are interested in more TOPSoccer will be encouraged to go home and register for the TOPSoccer League.

Opening Night

Near the end of August, all Players and their families who have registered to participate in the TOPSoccer League are invited, along with the Folsom Soccer Club Rec League, to the Soccer Opening Night Swim Party at the Folsom Aquatic Center from 6:30-9:30pm. Entrance is free to registered TOPSoccer and Rec League Players and families but limited to the first 1,000 attendees.  We are excited to offer this new TOPSoccer benefit and hope to see you there for a fantastic event!

TOPSoccer League

The TOPSoccer League is the central “event” for the TOPSoccer Program. TOPSoccer League practices occur every Friday in September from 6-7pm under the lights at Livermore Turf Field. It is free to participate in the League but we ask that Players register so we can ensure appropriate team distribution and support. Each registered TOPSoccer Player is assigned to a team and coach with whom they will create a team name, practice soccer skills, and scrimmage against other teams.  Players and Buddy Teams build friendships and a sense of teamwork while learning to play soccer in a fully supportive, non-competitive environment.

End of Season Play Day & Party

The end of the TOPSoccer League season is marked by a final Play Day and End of Season Party on the first Friday in October from 6-7:30pm at the Folsom Sports Complex. Like the initial Play Day and Registration Event that kicked off the season, this event is free for any child with special needs. We simply request that families register their Players to ensure adequate coverage and support. Players will participate in skill stations and play soccer-related games on the indoor turf field and then enjoy snacks in the party room to close out the season.
